WANTON SOUP ENCOUNTER

This morning, after dropping off my son at his school, I drove to a nearby coffee shop to buy breakfast.

I came to a stall selling wanton noodles. It was still early, and no one was queuing. The stall looked clean and neat. The hot steam rising from the cooking pot made me decide to order a bowl of wanton noodles.

As usual, I ordered dried wanton noodles. While I observed and was fascinated by how fast the cook prepared the noodles, I thought, “How nice it would be if she could give me some soup!”

As I was just casually thinking, suddenly, the Holy Spirit said, “Ask her!” Hence, I followed as instructed and said, “Can you give me some soup?” The cook did not reply, but another elderly assistant said, “Cannot! We don’t give away soup.” I had been rejected flatly.

Immediately, I spoke to God and said, “See! You asked me to ask, and she said No!”

I am like many others, already 40 over years of my walk with God, yet I am still learning to hear God, see visions, or unpack dreams. Many times, I can doubt what I hear and see, until another person confirms it. I also sinned by asking God questions. Our learning about God is incessant, it’s unending. HE is truly amazing!

[💡 God can speak to every believer because HIS spirit lives in us. We can understand God’s ideas, thoughts, and directions when we actively listen and allow Him to teach and speak to us. ]

1 Corinthians 2:10-11

10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.

[💡 For the believers, we have the Holy Spirit above our own spirit. For the non-believers, you must have the Holy Spirit living inside of you so that you can hear God speak. We have the Holy Spirit when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour.]

I remember a passage that narrates how Sarah laughed when she overheard the three angels who told Abraham that she would give birth to a child by a certain time. Sarah had already passed the childbearing age. She was standing in a room separated by a door. Yet the Lord was all-knowing, and HE knew she was laughing quietly.

The Lord knows our thoughts, reactions, and motives— both good and evil!

Genesis 18:12-13

Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” 13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

I did not say anything further to the elderly assistant with her ‘No’ reply. Very quickly, the wanton noodles were packed and handed to me. When I glanced at the packet once more to ensure I had everything before leaving, to my surprise, I saw a packet of soup tucked inside the carrier. I was overwhelmed and delighted to receive the packet of soup.

Without delay, I thanked the cook and the elderly assistant. They must be puzzled by my body language of exuberant joy, appreciation, and thanks to them. Perhaps they wondered, “What’s the matter with her? It’s only a small packet of soup!”

Indeed, they may not understand, but I do. I was happy not just because of the packet of soup. It was about my encounter with God in such an unusual manner that morning. It was about following the voice of the Holy Spirit, to do a simple thing.

Many times, our blessing comes just by simply obeying God and doing His bidding. In the human mind, we may feel that it is an impossible situation, something embarrassing, or something difficult and unlikely to achieve. Yet for God, nothing is impossible— Luke 1:37 NKJV. The bible says, God wants to give us good things.

Psalm 103:5 NLT

He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Sometimes, a blessing is already at the door, just one step away, but until we pick up our faith and say ‘yes’ to God, it is delayed or never comes.
